DNC Hands Out Bed Assignments For Delegates
CHARLOTTE, NC - Thousands of delegates coming to the DNC found out which of the 56 area hotels they'll stay at for the convention. But just like representation in Congress, the U.S territories are getting the two star treatment.
"We think Charlotte gives all of the delegates a chance to see all parts of the city," said Renaissance Charlotte SouthPark General Manager Kris Horacek, flanked by Convention Committee CEO Steve Kerrigan and other hotel managers. The press conference revealed which hotels will host delegates. While the plan is to spread out the delegates throughout the Charlotte area, even Horacek admitted during the presentation that some parts are better than others. Staffers for the convention, the Democratic Party and President Obama's campaign will stay at the Westin and Hilton in uptown. Delegates will also stay in that area and in four other zones - Concord, University, the Airport, and SouthPark. "And, we will make sure that every state that comes here has a first class hotel ready to serve all their needs," said Kerrigan. But the U.S. territories get Shoney's Restaurant and Cracker Barrel. Delegates from the Virgin Islands will stay at the Country Inn and Suites near the airport, which is a two diamond hotel. American Samoa and Guam will stay down the street at the Quality Inn and Suites. Some of the best hotels are located where everything's happening. Delegates from Illinois, Florida, Hawaii, Vermont, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Vermont, California, Colorado, Nevada, and Missouri will sleep, if they even do that, in uptown. By the way, all but one - Missouri - voted for Obama in 2008. The Omni, a four diamond hotel, is where Massachusetts delegates are staying; it's also Republican rival Gov. Mitt Romney's home state. From the Omni, it's a four minute walk to the convention. Mississippi delegates are staying at the Microtel, 10 miles away in the University area. Maryland, Michigan and Rhode Island are the furthest away at the Embassy Suites in Concord. While furthest South, close to the border (technically the state line) will be the delegates from Arizona in Ayrsley. And what better place for New Yorkers then SouthPark. They'll stay at the Residence Inn, the Renaissance, and the Double Tree near all the fancy restaurants and shopping. Earl Hannah, who's here in Charlotte on business, says the Double Tree is getting the rooms ready. "Most of them completely refurbished," he said. "Any nice amenity they would find in New York City, they can find right here." The other state staying in SouthPark is Pennsylvania, a swing state. And don't forget Vice President Joe Biden. Delaware delegates will stay at the Wingate by Wyndham on Tyvola Road. There's no food around, so they might have to rely on delivery. "It's a really great hotel," said pizza delivery driver Chris Bishop. "They bring us most of our business in this particular area." The DNC Committee said a lottery determined each state's priority preference. Representatives toured a selection of hotels. Then each state submitted their top three zone choices. |
