Hoarding A Factor In Deadly Fire?

Charlotte, NC - Just over 24 hours ago, 55 year-old Thomas Burgess was found dead inside a condo on Queens Road. The origin and cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Robert Johnson is one of Burgess’ neighbors who saw some of the clean up of the burned apartment this morning, "Boxes, papers, furniture, bedding and a lot of mattresses” –these were just some of the items removed from Burgess’ home, according to Johnson.

Other neighbors in the area believe Burgess was a hoarder. But just how prevalent is hoarding here and in general?

Eileen Stevie is a professional organizer who has worked with several hoarders. She says hoarding is much more prevalent than people realize, "People go home at the end of their day or after work and close the door. You don't know what goes on behind their door."

Buried Alive is a show on TLC that sheds light on the dangers of hoarding but still Stevie says that the issues are deeper than the show can convey, “they give their items so much value, more than their own families.”

And as Stevie points out, unfortunately sometimes the consequences can be fatal, "Clutter can kill you, its unfortunately true, people have been buried by it and suffocated by it."

According to the International OCD Foundation up to 5% of the worlds population displays clinical hoarding.
