Charlotte, NC - Drive down Park Road and a different kind of "Occupy" will snag your attention.
South Charlotte resident Tim Saunders is walking by and says, “It's a good way for folks to come in there and go to church."
Instead of Occupying Charlotte or Wall Street, Park Road Baptist is urging the public to Occupy Church.
A sign posted in front of the church reads, "Occupy Church! Give Sundays their due!"
Co-Pastor Russ Dean says it's a great way to grab attention, “The Church is here. It makes a lot of difference in people's lives and we need to be occupying the Church."
Dean says the Occupy Church idea took off, getting the children and youth fired up.
But it also starts a powerful conversation in the community.
Park Road Baptist Youth Group member Austin Dower is a South Mecklenburg Junior. He says, “It's just a great opportunity for us as a Church to really show Charlotte who we are and what we believe in and the fact that church is important to us."
Occupy Church is becoming a movement of its own as congregations across the nation use the publicity and attention of “Occupy” to get people through the doors.
With tens of thousands of cars driving past the Park Road sign everyday Dean says the “Occupy” message is a great reminder.
Dean says, “This is not a protest, it's a celebration of church."
He says it's meant to get you in the doors of any church. But Occupy Church is also one more way to spread the inclusive message that Park Road Baptist is welcoming to all.
Dean says, “Come join us and be a part of our congregation, we'd be glad to have you."
Pastor Dean says Occupy Church is not political in anyway, it's just a way to get people to ask questions.
