ReBoot Charlotte: United Way of the Central CarolinasCHARLOTTE, N.C. - It wasn't long ago that the United Way of the Central Carolinas was scandalized over big pay, bonuses and job perks. Many in the community responded immediately by cutting support to the agency and some wondered if reputation could be restored. But the agency has indeed made its way back and the woman responsible for the new era is executive director Jane McIntyre. So what made McIntyre accept the top job at United Way of Central Carolinas? McIntyre says " I felt led to this job, for me it's an opportunity of a lifetime it's a God given gift that I am able to do it, I pray a lot about this job." Those prayers and tireless effort are clearly working. It's been almost two years since UWCC was mired in scandal over its fired leader's salary and compensation package. Details were embarrassing and public backlash severe. McIntyre took the job but cut her own pay and made immediate and systematic changes to the compensation structure at the agency. McIntyre says "there are no bonuses, there are no added hidden things, no club memberships, no car, none of that." As McIntyre garnered support, one of the first to stand with her was the Levine Foundation, a trusted source of so much philanthropy in the QC. Agencies like the Salvation Army say they feel McIntyre's connection and commitment. Many doubted this United Way would once again stand for integrity responsibility and service and for many in the world of non-profits, Jane McIntyre engineered the ultimate ReBoot.
