CHARLOTTE, N.C.--Local law enforcement officers will ride bicycles from Charlotte to Washington, D.C. in honor and memory of those who have died in the line of deputy.

The ride will start in Charlotte and other officers and citizens will join the ride as it passes through towns and cities on the route.

Each mile is a tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.  A candlelight vigil will be held at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial at the completion of the ride.

This year's ride will be dedicated to CMPD Officer Fred Thornton, who was killed when a flash-bang device detonated as he handled SWAT equipment.
