The Fast and the Growing Number of FuriousCHARLOTTE, N.C. - A banner on a light post in the southwest Charlotte community of Ayrsley promises "a whole world at your doorstep." On Sunday, it was a whole Dodge Challenger. Thankfully, the business it crashed into, a children's dance and music center on Ayrsley Town Boulevard, was closed at the time, but for resident and nearby business owner Chris Stulginsky, this crash was too close for comfort. And too frequent. He says, "This is a very pedestrian-friendly area." Recently, a driver slammed into a parked car and Stulginsky says not long ago, another driver came within a foot and a half of hitting a light pole. He blames speed. Resident Jose Flynn also says speed is an issue. He says of the passing traffic, "They go pretty fast, you know." The city tells FOX Charlotte the speed limit on the roadway is 35 miles per hour, but traffic signs there read 25 miles per hour. We're told the developer installed the signs, and essentially, they're inaccurate. The Charlotte Department of Transportation also tells FOX they feel they've been "quite responsive and concerned about this street" but that because of the use, design, speed and traffic volumes, it's "not a candidate for traditional traffic calming," like speed bumps or four way stops. In the meantime, the area, popular with pedestrians and families, will just get busier. Construction is underway on new residential buildings. Flynn hopes next time a crash happens, no one gets hurt. He says, "Hopefully we won't get to that point but you never know what could happen, you know?" Stulginsky has also reached out to the developers, but their hands are essentially tied. He trusts that transportation officials will correct the problem. He says, "I'd rather not be in a reactive state than a proactive state, that's for sure." City engineers and investigators are looking into the recent crash reports to determine if lowering the speed limit to 30 miles per hour is a good idea. They'll also visit the area again to determine if any signage improvements may be needed. |
