Yes to Bibles, No to Spell Books?CHARLOTTE, N.C. - It started when Ginger Strivelli's 12-year-old son came home from school with a Bible. "Buncombe County Schools just have the idea, they've always favored Christianity," she says. The Bibles were donated and staff allowed students to take one if they wanted. When Strivelli, a Pagan, complained, she says she was assured the school would distribute any and all donated religious materials. She then tried to donate about 70 spell books but was turned away. Now, Strivelli's four school age children (she also has two adult children) are being bullied. But she says this issue is about all kids. "There are plenty of children that are minority faiths in Buncombe County school system," she says. School leaders are reviewing policies and practices with attorneys and say in a statement, "During this review period, no school in the system will be accepting donations of materials that could be viewed as advocating a particular religion or belief." Charlotte attorney John Gresham specializes in constitutional law. He says this appears to be a First Amendment violation. "I think they will either have to change the policy where they will allow no religious material or they will have to allow material other than your traditional Christian materials in the school," says Gresham. We asked CMS for its policy. A spokesperson says CMS is open to receiving donated religious material, but that everything would be reviewed before being distributed to students. Gresham warns, "They would need to be careful to have a legitimate, non-discriminatory basis for making that determination." Strivelli is considering a lawsuit. She says it'll take a lot to make her comfortable in Buncombe County. "It's not just a matter of changing the policy. They have to make up for the misbehavior they've already done," she says. Strivelli says she has Christian friends who support her in this protest. The Buncombe County school board will meet on February 2nd. This issue is expected to be addressed then. |
