School Districts in both Carolinas are dealing with drastic budget cuts. In Rock Hill, all schools and school offices will be closed next Friday. It’s one of a number of furlough days teachers and administrators are required to take to balance the budget.

This school year, administrators must take four unpaid days off, and teachers must take two, including a scheduled teacher work day next Friday.

“When you’ve lost $10.5 million, you have to do something to make up the losses in revenue and this is what we’re doing,” said Elaine Baker, Spokesperson for the Rock Hill School District.

All South Carolina school districts have to furlough employees. One requirement is the days have to be taken when students are not scheduled to be in class.

Next year, the district will see even more furloughs. “We know that next year’s not going to be a good year either. We’ve already been told that. So, we’re just bracing ourselves for what’s ahead,” said Baker.
