Spray Painters Add “Under God” to Atheist SignCHARLOTTE, NC - It didn’t’ take long for people to notice the sign that had been missing the words “Under God.” Watch Morgan Fogarty's Story: NC Secular Association Sponsors "Godless" Billboard
“It was a little bit of a shock, but again at the same time, we were hoping nothing like this would happen,” says William Warren, with Charlotte Atheists and Agnostics. Warran says the act is disappointing but not a complete surprise.
“When somebody got it in their head that's what they wanted to do, that's what they were going out there to do,” he says.
And even though it’s an act of vandalism, some people say it’s hard for them not to support it.
“My personal opinion, it's awesome, for somebody to actually stand up and get up there, and go through the process of doing that, to change what should have been up there in the first place,” says Denver, NC resident William Phillips.
But for one thing: it wasn’t easy. Somebody had to go through a mess of tall grass, briars, and trash to climb up the ladder and get to the top of the billboard.
Now police are trying to find out if someone saw it happen.
"Definitely, especially with it being lighted at night, somebody had to have seen somebody up there doing that,” says Lowell, NC resident Kenneth Harlow.
The atheist group says they’re not giving up. The sign will be replaced by the 4th of July.
Meanwhile, others say the group achieved just what they wanted, plenty of attention.
“To try and see if they can find anybody else to bring into their group or see if they can sign, find them out,” Phillips says.
It’s a sign that’s stirring up more and more controversy.
