CHARLOTTE, NC – Joseph Rollins spends his spare time buying up internet domains he thinks will be popular in the future.

“At one time in my portfolio, I had over 1000 names, right now I think I have about 400 to 500 names, “Rollins says.

About six years ago, he purchased BPCares.com and several similar web addresses.

“I was watching the NBA on TV and something came up and said ‘NBA Cares,’” he says.

With those words stuck in his head, he bought the names of several major companies next to the word ‘cares.”

Fast-forward to 2010 and the gulf oil spill.

“I got a call, I got a call from BP before I even took it seriously, I got a call saying they were interested in acquiring the domain,” Rollins says.

He says it didn’t take long for him to decide he didn’t want to sell the domain to the oil giant.

Instead, he wants a person or another company to buy it and says he’ll give half to efforts to clean up the gulf.

He says BP officials keep calling, as the company looks to rebuild its image, but hasn’t mentioned a dollar amount.

“I think it's just a tragic situation and I think we can learn a lot about what not to do, that's why I’m passionate about using the funds here to help the people in the gulf,” he says.
