CHARLOTTE, N.C. - UNC Charlotte freshman Graham Buckner has a roommate that he admits is not his best friend.  He says, "Me and my roommate are nothing alike at all."

They find a way to make it work and like most new students on campus, signed a "roommate contract" in the beginning of the year. But still, toes get stepped on.  He says, "Actually, my roommate tweeted something about me on Twitter and I found out."

For Buckner, it wasn't a big deal.  For Rutger's Tyler Clementi, a jury will now decide if his roommate's tweet contributed to the 18-year-old's suicide.  19-year-old Dharun Ravi is accused of using a webcam to spy on Clementi's sexual encounter with another man.  Ravi is accused of then tweeting "Roommate asked for the room till midnight.  I...turned on my webcam.  I saw him making out with a dude. Yay."

Ravi's accused of trying to spy two days later, when Clementi again asked him to stay away from the room.  The day after that, Clementi threw himself off a bridge.

"Housing should be the last place where they feel like they have to educate.  They should feel safe in their housing," says Shane Windmeyer.  He is the executive director of Campus Pride,  a national non profit based in Charlotte that works with gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender college students across the country.

Windmeyer says students shouldn't be alone in thinking about their own safety.  "The colleges get paid to do that.  So having options on the housing form, especially when it comes to lesbian, gay and transgender students, is important."

Windmeyer says only three colleges in North Carolina offer gender neutral housing: Duke, Guilford College and Warren-Wilson College.

Back at UNC Charlotte, Buckner wishes he had taken the roommate contract more seriously.  But he says he is respectful and expects it in return.  He says, "Twitter's a very public place, Facebook, very public place.  So you shouldn't put anything out there that you don't want other people to know about."

At Johnson and Wales here in Charlotte, roommates also sign agreements.  The University is rolling out a new program that trains students, staff and faculty on how to be supportive of LGBT students.
