Flea Market Vendors Worry About Business After FireSALISBURY, NC – Saturday would normally be the busiest day of the week for the Webb Road Flea Market in Salisbury. Instead, it lies in ruins after a devastating fire that started Friday morning.
Nearby resident Bill Haithcock was one of the first to see the black smoke billowing up.
“It was burning at the lower end and probably about 30 minutes later it really spread fast,” Haithcock says.
Saturday, vendors and former customers came by to get a firsthand look.
Rog Wichman says he lost everything at his business.
“Yeah, we had motorcycle gear, I was into gun holsters, I had all the gun holsters out here,” Wichman says.
But he considers himself one of the lucky ones.
“The worst thing is so many of these people had no insurance, we did have some insurance, so many people did not, and for a lot of them this was their lively hood,” he says.
It will be Tuesday before vendors get to take a closer look at the damage. They say they'll do their best to salvage what little they may have left.
Fire investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fire. Witnesses say the fire spread rapidly after a loud explosion.
