Charlotte, NC - Charlotte is "Rebooting" from the recession. But while many begin recovery, the economic slump leaves others looking for help.

Amy Bumgarner from Granite Falls, NC has been waiting for, “13 hours, long hours."

Bumgarner got in line at 3:30 a.m. Friday at the Missions of Mercy Dental Clinic for a long awaited dental repair. The former retail and production worker lost her insurance years ago when she lost her job.

Bumgarner says despite the wait she's grateful, “It's the same for a lot of people, not just here but other people that need work like this done."

More than 2,000 were already in line when she arrived, hundreds more were turned away when the clinic reached capacity.

Hundreds of dental professionals started seeing patients around 6 a.m. Friday and will work through the night until 6 o'clock Saturday evening. They say the overwhelming number of people showing up for care speaks to the need here in the Charlotte area.

Census figures put 14.2% of Mecklenburg County's population below the poverty line.

At Crisis Assistance Ministry Michelle Hamilton says in tight times the poorest are hit the hardest, “When we experience recovery as a community in general the families that we serve, families that are living in poverty in our community will not see recovery for another two or three years after that."

To answer that need is why Dr. Evan Miller and the organizers of the clinic say they're here.

There's more people in Charlotte so this comes out,” he says motioning to a packed auditorium at the Charlotte Convention Center. “But you go to Sparta (sic) there'll be lines there too, you know. If you go to Gastonia there'll be lines there too."

This is the largest NC Missions of Mercy Dental Clinic yet, the first to run for 36 hours straight.

Director Dr. Bill Blaylock says the need is on the rise, “We're seeing more and more folks that have lost their jobs, lost their benefits and coming to us for their dental needs."

Meanwhile, Danny “Scottie” Scott of West Charlotte is just glad for the help, “Thank everybody. Thank you!"

The dental clinic hopes to service to over 2,500 patients before close.

Crisis Assistance Ministry sees up to 200 hundred families every single day.
