Infrared Home Survey

Charlotte, NC - Tyler Lee just bought a home in the Plaza-Midwood neighborhood. Before he moves in, he's getting an infrared survey of the house to find out where air is leaking. John Cannamela of Infraredsurvey.com says the thermal images his camera picks up, offer a much more in depth look at problem areas in your home.

As Cannamela points his camera towards this windows of Lee's home and then pans to the walls and ceilings, a projector attached to the camera displays an infrared picture on the wall. The blue spots represent cool areas and red represents heat. As Lee watches parts of his home's deficiencies be highlighted, he says "What surprises me is like the corners of the room and some of the walls around where I wouldn't expect to see em. Going up toward the ceiling and things like that, where obviously something is coming in."

Cannamela says, while every house is different there are some general things all of us can do to improve our home's efficiency. He points to sockets as a place to start. Cannamela says without gaskets in your socket your home could be losing some of its heating. "12 outlets equal almost a square foot. that's like opening a window." Since most homes have dozens of sockets that's could be a significant problem.

Then of course there's insulation. Cannamela says "By adding insulation you can save 10 to 20 percent a year." For folks like Tyler Lee, that's the kind of information that makes sense and will save him cents in the long run.
