CHARLOTTE, NC – In Uptown, people gathered for a parade honoring the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Some parents say they’re celebrating today because their kids have to go to school Monday.

This issue has drawn plenty of debate since CMS announced the holiday would used as a snow make-up day.

Some parents have gotten fired up.

“Make it up at the end of the year because all holidays should be sacred,” says South Charlotte resident Angel Morris.

Others say they have mixed feelings.

“I feel like they should have taken teachers workdays or spring break but at the same time he was all about education so I have, you know, mixed feelings about it,” says South Charlotte resident Ebony Laney-Crawford.

Rev. Al Sharpton has gone as far as saying parents should consider keeping their kids out of school Monday.

Today Mayor Anthony Foxx weighed in on the debate.

He says the decision is regrettable, but says parents should send their kids to school.

“Well, I think we as a community have some soul searching to do, on our children and it's not just the schools, it's a much broader set of issues,” Foxx says.

Foxx says people should set-aside some time though to reflect on King’s legacy.
