CHARLOTTE, NC- Scotty McCreery joins a list of big names on American Idol from North Carolina capturing the hearts and votes of America.

Over the last 10 seasons, North Carolina is one of only two states in the country, the other is Alabama, to have three contestants representing the state in American Idol finales.

Clay Aiken was runner up in season two, Fantasia Barrino won the American Idol title in season three, and McCreery is fighting for the title this week.

"Gospel, R&B, country, pop…. America has seen artists come out of North Carolina from all different genres," said music producer Eric Tavares of Next Level Gold & Platinum Records.

Tavares credits versatility for seven top 10 finalists... all with styles of their own.

There's also the southern charm.

"Daughtry, Fantasia, Clay Aiken... They all have that warmth to them. Would you agree? I think they're really warm and they have an appeal that you can tap into," said Tavares.

Another producer in town says they have something else to offer... roots.

"Most people from down south started in the church singing in the choir or junior choir. And gospel music is music from the soul... from the heart," said Richie Irby of BOC Music Studio.

Irby thinks singing from the heart is what contributes to their America Idol success.

"Their character, their integrity, the heart, the hunger. I think all of that plays a part in why there are so many people coming out of the Carolinas now," said Irby.
