CHARLOTTE, NC-The "All about Baby" mini expo in South Charlotte is filled with new and expectant mothers, but this may not be the norm in Charlotte.

"We in general saw a lull in 2009" says Dr. Navin Bhojwani with the Bradford Clinic, a large practice in Charlotte. Dr. Bhojwani adds, "When people started losing their jobs, and there were threats of banks moving out of town, they said can I really afford to have another baby."

Nidhie Dhiman operates Belly Elan, a maternity and baby boutique in the Blakeney Shopping Center, she says she noticed fewer pregnant women and babies being born last year in her circle of friends and in her business. Nidhie says "I actually had friends who wanted to wait, their husbands got laid off from their jobs, so they said let's put it on hold until we can get a job, or just the insurance factor."

New mom Brandy Cardarelli says most people in her Ballantyne neighborhood cut back, but she and her husband had a baby three weeks ago. "You don't want to have children and not have the coverage, it's just scary." She thinks things are starting to change and so does business owner Nidhie. She's seen the number of pregnant women registering in her store grow from 10 a week to nearly 20 a week.

As for Dr. Bhojwani, he says it's too soon to tell but he agrees it seems the numbers now are on the rise!
