CHARLOTTE, N.C. - CMS says the fights and violence at Harding University High are now being handled. It started in September with homecoming canceled because of gang threats; then a school lock down and more campus arrests this year than any other school in the district.

Principal Alicisa Johnson says that's what happens when a magnet-type program becomes a traditional high school. But Interim Superintendent Hugh Hattabaugh had comforting words for Harding parents and students

"Everybody works together to ensure that we have a safe school day for every child in the district," said Hattabaugh.

What the school calls disruptive problems, have been blamed on a few students. Neither the superintendent nor school administrators provided specific numbers.

In any case, Principal Alicisa Johnson says they've been taken care of. "We have a strong academic focus here at Harding, and that will continue to be our focus."

Campus security has increased from two to ten officers. While other high schools in the district have one resource officer, Harding has two. And the school's added security cameras to monitor student behavior. With those changes, a hand-picked group of students said they feel safe.

Student William McClure said it's just a few people at school making bad choices. "As long as they are dealt with, I'm fine."

Aubrey Hall told reporters she can't let student peers affect how she learns. "As long as they're dealt with, it's fine."

Harding junior Roberto Martinez said everything is always great. "For example, I feel comfortable and safe here."

According to a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department report, there have been 22 arrests at the Harding campus so far this year. That's the most of any other. Last year, there was only one.

Hattabaugh said hindsight is always better. "But I feel like we're working toward the goal, we've seen a serious regression in any events on campus or incidents. They've decreased considerably."

Principal Johnson said it's shocking to believe fights, threats and arrests take place at traditional high schools,  but it does.

When comparing Harding to other traditional schools, the arrests numbers are comparable. Last year, there were 32 arrests at Vance High, dropping to 18 this year. And at West Charlotte High, 30 students were arrested in 2010. But this year, they've had 19 campus arrests.
