MATTHEWS, N.C. - From New York to the Queen City, and around the world, everyone enthusiastically welcomed the new year. We all said adios to 2011, which for many was personally a tough year. But the birth of 2012, gives everyone hope for a better future.

"Who knows, he could be the next president of the United States," said Tiffany Peterson of her new born baby. Christian John Peterson is not only a New Year's Baby, but he's already  a mover and shaker - at least, that's how mom describes the pregnancy.

"Oh, he's stubborn, he's going to be feisty," said Tiffany, looking down at Christian in her arms.

With a 14-month-old already waiting at home, their fourth child - a happy surprise - wasn't part of the plan. But when the Petersons now look into their son's eyes at Matthews Presbyterian Hospital, they can't imagine this year without Christian.

"You would never take anything back, he's awesome, he's gorgeous," said Todd Peterson, "and I got a beautiful wife that takes care of all the kids while I work."

Todd works as a car salesmen, so financially, it can be tough week to week. But with a new baby and a new year, the possibilities are endless.

"Let him know the world is beautiful and its a great place to grow up," said Peterson. "And be positive, 100%."

Baby Christian will be growing up during a year when many say optimism will run high. You've got the Democratic National Convention coming in September, which symbolizes in many ways that the city has arrived on the big stage. And then there's a sense of pride that winning days lie ahead.

At Beantown Tavern in Downtown Matthews, it's a different kind of family, excited about a different bundle of joy.

"I think the expectations are high next year.," said Jimmy Lookadoo of Ballantyne, talking about the Carolina Panthers. "I think most of us think, 'we are going to make the playoffs'."

Even with the team losing their final game , Jimmy and his family of Panthers fans can't wait for the birth of a new season.

"You can just feel it everywhere you go," said Chris Barkan of Matthews. "The town is electric, really.

And as the owner of Beantown puts it, a  winning attitude in 2012 can go a long way.

"But when the Panthers win, it makes a huge difference in our business," said Jami Gaskin. "People want to come out, they want to watch the game, they want to have fun."
